We feel the real opportunity for steam power is in the small 1 to 20 horsepower stationary steam engines used mainly to power generators for home power production. And not just (on-demand) usable power but 12/24 volt power to charge a bank of batteries and then run the home/cabin from the bank of batteries.
Though we do recommend the use of Solar power or Wind power alone. We recommend steam as an alternative back up. For fuel you can burn wood, coal, paper, trash, gasoline, fuel oil, diesel, natural gas, propane and even waste oil. Anything that burns can be used as a fuel.
And with the use of a Fresnel Lens you can use the sun to heat a homemade boiler to make steam to power your steam engine. So that way you will not even need to burn any fuel to run your steam engine.

We have developed this site to promote the use of steam as an alternative power source. When we first thought about steam we thought it was a dead or dying technology, but the more we looked the more we found it was the power of the future. Dependable, trustworthy, long life, a simple technology, most engines can be up-sized easily or down-sized as needed. There was a steam engine in England that ran day and night 24/7 for over 150 years (non-stop) now that's dependable.

It is not our intention to promote one engine over another or one boiler or fuel over another but to open up these ideas and technologies to all and let the consumer decide what's best for them.
A boiler can be as simple as a Pressure Cooker with a steam out fitting attached. Modern Pressure Cookers have a Safety Valve that releases pressure when the pressure gets to high. And the Pressure Cooker can be sat on any burner, camp stove or even on top of a wood stove or camp fire for heat.
There is a way where you can collect the waste steam coming off a steam engine and pipe it into your home for heat, then it exits your home heating radiator and runs underground to a collecting tank and is re-used in the steam engine over and over again. I dare you to get such use or versatility out of any other technology.
There is a technology where you can burn waste oil that you can collect for free (or nearly free) and then you are generating FREE power and FREE heat to heat your home/cabin or shop. Steam power now is looking better and better.
A lot of people are worried about the future and the future of power. With shortages looming, price increases, increase in taxes on energy and the possibility of CAP & TRADE being passed which would add 25% to 50% increase in energy costs to you. Also the energy industry just announced a 60% increase in cost of power to be increased to your power bill over the next 3 to 5 years. That can be from 60% to a whopping 120% increase over the next 3 to 5 years. A lot of people are seriously looking for ways to make there own power. And with 2012 looming ever closer a lot of people are looking for ways to be self sufficient for there power needs.
A person interested in this technology should not think in terms of powering their whole house with electric heat and air conditioning, electric hot water heater, electric cook stoves and electric refrigerators but think small. Think about your necessities, conserve every where you can and when you only power your nessary things such as some low energy (LED) lights, one TV, one radio etc. you can start to intergrate 12 volt into your everyday lives and start saving real energy/money. Our goal is to get started with a small system used as needed not a large system used 24/7, which you could do but it would take a large amount of fuel to power a larger system to run your WHOLE house with all it's electrical devices. Start small, think small even if you live in a large home that's all electric have a cabin mentality. when you think about steam power and what it can do for you. Consider a multi-cylinder engine for it's compact design and low cost to build. Then run a generator/alternator that's not of such a large capacity that your small engine can't run it. With this type of system you will be charging a bank of batteires to run your house/cabin on. So you will want to integerate this system with solar panels and a wind generator. The good news here is with a smaller deversified system you will not have to shell out the big bucks for a large system with the solar panels OR the wind generator. Depending on how big your bank of batteries are will determine how big a solar aray you will need or how big a wind generator you will need. I don't know how accurate this is but I have heard say that for every battery you have you need one solar panel, but the batteries come in various sizes up to forklift batteries weighing a ton or more and solar panels come in all sizes from 1/2 watt up to 230 watts and more each. I guess a good rule of thumb here is for every 200 amps you have in storage capacity you will need about 150 watts to charge it. Now that's not to say the sun don't set and the clouds don't ever come over your house.

One thing that seems to be missing when you get into steam engines, you can find the small model steam engines in kit form or plans or the really big engines to power a car, farm equipment etc. But you almost never find the small home power station steam engines to power a DC or AC generator to charge a bank of batteries. So we are including here the plans for an Orginal Dr. Tony Lamb designed steam engine that uses off the shelf parts with a minimal of machine work, operates on a work bench and will power a 1000 to 2000 watt generator or alternator.
The flywheel is made from round steel plate found on ebay we use the 12 inch version here. When drilling the center axel hole this is a job for a professional or a machine shop as it is critical as it has to be absolute dead center IF not your flywheel will wobble as it turns and you will have to start all over with a NEW flywheel and have a center axel hole drille all over again.
We used a swamp cooler pully, axel and bearings to build this from scratch.
As for Power Push Rod and Valve Push Rod you will need a strong enough piece of steel to do the job that will NOT bend under pressure but is light enough to do the job effeciently.

As for the placement of the connecting pin that connects to the pushrods remember the farther they are from the center the farther they will move your valve in and out and usually you only need less than an inch of movement of that valve so it will be necessary to place these connecting pins in fairly close to the axel on the valve pushrod and farther out on the power push pin that drives your power push rod and drives your flywheel.

Remember these blocks of wood need to be high enough to keep your flywheel and pully from rubbing on anything and then the blocks that hold up the Piviots need to be high enough to make the power push rods and the valve push rods level with the base. So the blocks of wood may need to be higher or shorter adjusted per the size of the flywheel and pulley you use.

Shows cotton twine wound around the wooden dowel until the piston fits snug into the cylinder, but not to tight. When you are ready to assemble be sure to lube the cotton twine very well with super lube to help make it air tight in the cylinder.
With this configuration what you have is a twin cylinder steam engine, so keep in mind that a one inch piston may not seem like much but you are building two of them, (twice the power).
With this steam engine we have taken out almost all the machine shop work possible and have taken out all the special parts that you have to order from some one in Bangladish.
We like Alternators over generators as you can make a longer run of your lead in wire without so much loss of power. But if you set up your steam engine in your garage and you have your batteries in your garage also then you will not have a problem with running your power cord on a 40 to 60 ft. run to get to your batteries You can find Generators and Alternators on ebay.

This unit shows only one Fresnel lens being used, you may need to use two to make the amount of steam you need for a larger steam engine.
Also the "boiler" part of the cast iron pipe may need to be 4" in diameter and 12" to 18" long and then stepped down through the use of reducers to make the amount of steam you need for use in a home steam engine used for generating power.
